BC: Friday Five - Judges, Social Housing, Leaks, Revolts and Transit Cops

Author: Jordan Bateman 2012/07/13

Time for this week’s Friday Five:

1. A judge has ruled that judges should get a raise, after the B.C. Government tried to apply their net zero wage mandate. This despite the fact B.C. judges are already the second-highest paid in Canada, have seen salary increases of 43% since 2004, and have received raises in 11 of the past 13 years. Frankly, judges are overpaid at $231,000 a year—yet they sued taxpayers for more. Amazing.

2. Metro Vancouver’s social housing stock is crumbling, but they have no money for replacement. Despite all the political backpatting that Metro’s social housing didn’t cost Metro taxpayers, we now see that these politicians haven’t been setting anything aside for replacement. Did they think a housing fairy would come down and magically update everything? This is yet another reason why Metro should stick to what it was formed to do: run the sewer, water and waste systems. Oh, and this headline that asks, “Metro Vancouver’s 50 affordable housing complexes will need replacement, but with whose money?” Sadly, it will be taxpayer money. It always is with these people.

3. The $36-million, two-year-old Olympic Village Community Centre is already leaking. Whistleblowers said it would—and it did. So Vancouver taxpayers will throw another $135,000 at the problem, instead of having it done right the first time.

4. Kudos to Tom and Norma Murray on putting feet to their concerns and starting a petition to hold Pitt Meadows property taxes down. Lots of people complain, but very few take action. This can work—look at West Vancouver!

5. Come on, Shirley Bond, don’t let taxpayers down… we’re still waiting to hear you order Transit Police to be part of the TransLink audit.
